240 Volt LED Lamps

If you still have incandescent lamps at home, consider when they blow, replacing them with these. This unit is a 13 watt one which is suitable for most average sized rooms. There is a smaller 5 watt 108 LED unit but I would only recommend those for a passageway or a small area like a toilet. They can be bought in B22 bayonet cap or E27 Edison screw types.

These units use even less power than Compact Fluro's (CFL), a  reasonably cheep on ebay and are long lasting.

  1. LED's are certainly the way to go. But there are few things to beware aware of when looking around.

Colour is one. Do you need cool or warm white versions.

Check the Efficacy: In other words, the Light output in Lumens compared to the electrical power in Watts. Some are better than others.

Electrical, IR and ordinary noise: Some LED's generate a lot of electrical interference or interfere with TV remotes etc. or simply have a really annoying high pitched whistle.

Reliability: even though the individual LED's have a very long lifetime the electronics driving them can sometimes be very low quality and may fail after a relatively short time. In addition, more individual LED's means more points of failure.

Having said all that, they are still a good idea, just make sure you do a bit of good old fashoined research. Remember, if a deal looks too good to be true then it probably is.

  2. Have you tried any of the LED replacements for low-voltage halogen downlights? Those little downlights are the bane of my existence - energy-hungry little blighters! I've tried the CFL replacements, but they're really only good for hallways etc as they take too long to get up to proper brightness.

I'll have to check eBay and see what I can find.

    1. Hi Darren , No I haven’t, they are available on ebay.
Just make sure that you buy the correct voltage 240, 24 or 12 and have a look at the base ..best to get a box from the old globes and check details so you don’t buy the wrong one. Then trail 1 before paying out for a heap of them.
